Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. It is the most common vaginal condition in women ages 15-44. Although BV is not a conventional STI, it is associated with sexual activity, and it can be passed to same-sex partners.
BV can be treated with antibiotics. Untreated, it sometimes goes away on its own; however, treatment can help avoid chronic symptoms or other associated health risks, such as having an increased chance of getting or transmitting other sexually transmitted infections (STIs, also called STDs).
