Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test

Check for the presence of Mycoplasma genitalium, also known as Mgen, which is a sexually transmitted infection. Many people with Mgen never experience symptoms, yet they can still pass the infection to others. Mgen can be treated with antibiotics; however, if left untreated, it can cause serious and permanent health problems in women, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and can cause pregnancy complications.

Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma genitalium. Some people with Mgen may never experience symptoms, which makes it very easy to spread from person to person during sex.

Mgen can be treated with antibiotics; however, some infections are harder to treat due to the increasing rate of drug-resistant Mgen strains. This test does not provide information on which strain you are infected with if your results are positive.

If left untreated, Mgen may cause serious complications and can spread to reproductive organs. In women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. In pregnant women, Mgen may lead to premature labor and delivery. Long-term effects in men are not yet determined.
