Adiponectin (Fat Metabolism) Test

4.9 (120+ Verified Reviews)

This adiponectin blood test measures the levels of adiponectin in your blood. Adiponectin is a hormonal protein made by fat cells that is related to glucose control and fat metabolism. Adiponectin makes your body more sensitive to insulin, which allows your body to keep blood glucose levels in a healthy range. It also works to store fat in the proper places (ie, in your skin) in the body, instead of around your organs, or in skeletal muscle. This can reduce inflammation and further improves glucose levels and fat metabolism.1

This test panel measures adiponectin levels in your blood. Adiponectin is a hormonal protein made by fat cells related to glucose control and fat metabolism. Lower levels of adiponectin have been associated with insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).

Research shows that individuals with low adiponectin levels have a 3-time greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a 9-time greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and have twice the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Contraindications & Warnings

The Adiponectin (Fat Metabolism) Test is not a stand-alone diagnostic tool and should be interpreted alongside other metabolic tests and clinical findings. Adiponectin levels can be influenced by factors such as body fat distribution, recent weight changes, physical activity, diet, smoking, medications, and hormonal status, and some laboratories may require fasting before testing. Low levels are associated with conditions like insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and increased cardiometabolic risk but do not confirm disease, while unusually high levels may occur in certain chronic illnesses or severe weight loss and are not always beneficial. Reference ranges vary by laboratory, and the test is not recommended for routine screening, but rather for targeted metabolic risk assessment or research purposes.
