Check for the presence of trichomoniasis, a common curable sexually transmitted disease. Many people with trichomoniasis never experience symptoms, yet they can still pass the infection to others. If left untreated, trichomoniasis can cause serious health complications.
If you’re sexually active, especially if you’ve had unprotected sex, regular STD screening is one of the best ways to protect your health and the health of your partner. Early detection makes treatment easier and helps prevent complications. The only way to know for sure if you have an STD or STI is to get tested.
No doctor’s visit needed.
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomoniasis is one of the most common curable STDs in the United States1. About 70% of people never develop symptoms, which makes it easy to spread unknowingly through sexual contact1. When symptoms do occur, they may include itching, burning, genital redness, unusual discharge, or discomfort during urination or sex.
In women, trichomoniasis commonly infects the vulva, vagina, cervix, or urethra. In men, it typically infects the urethra. Testing is usually done with a vaginal swab (self- or provider-collected) or urine sample.
Trichomoniasis can be cured with antibiotics. If untreated, the infection may remain in your body for months or even years without symptoms, and can be passed to sexual partners. Ongoing infection can cause inflammation of the genital tract, increase the risk of contracting or transmitting HIV, and may contribute to infertility in both men and women. In pregnant women, trichomoniasis has been linked to complications including premature birth and low birth weight.
